I ended up joining Backcountry Ski Patrol and making an intergenerational group of friends. Two years ago, when the dank Willamette Valley winters threatened to bury me in seasonal affective disorder, I begged Julie to teach me to cross-country ski. In the mountains near my house, I discovered not only bluebird skies above snowy slopes, but a group of multigenerational friends who inspired me to join Backcountry Ski Patrol. The members of our patrol in the Willamette National Forest span four generations, from Gen Zers to Boomers. Some of us cross-country ski.

Megan Barr and Amanda Johnston snowshoe through Buffalo’s snow-covered streets after an intense lake-effect snowstorm in western and northern New York. Residents of western and northern New York began digging out Sunday from snowfall that was among the most intense on record, even as bad weather continued in other parts of the state. Many cities and towns east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario were buried in as much as 5 feet and in some places 6 feet of snow by two powerful lake-effect storms.

“We’ve seen that areas with lower moose density tend to have healthier moose with fewer ticks,” said state Moose Biologist Lee Kantar, who is running the study. Maine's moose population is currently the largest of all the lower 48 states at over 60,000 animals, according to state figures, thanks to an ideal habitat and careful management of the annual moose hunt. Kantar is now leading research to test whether thinning the moose population through increased hunting can help. It is unclear, he said, what an ideal moose population would be for Maine but he hopes the study will help answer that. Each year, the Maine moose hunt draws around 50,000 applications in a lottery for the 2,000 to 3,000 moose permits typically issued.
